Makawao Cemetery History Theatre

This year’s Makawao Cemetery History Theater shines a light on the individuals who helped shape Hawai‘i’s hospitality and tourism industries during a time of immense transformation. We bring to life the stories of Margaret Morgan McCarthy (1865–1934), influential civic leader and wife of Governor C.J. McCarthy; Alexander Young (1833–1910), visionary hotelier and industrialist; and William F. Pogue (1856–1932), Maui rancher and tourism advocate. Together, their lives trace the development of Hawai‘i’s visitor industry from royal receptions and steamship arrivals to the rise of grand hotels and modern tourism. Join us as we honor their legacies and explore how their contributions continue to shape the islands’ cultural and economic landscape. There aren’t printed tickets for the performances, your name and those of your guests, if you have any, is the only thing you need at the door for admittance. The ticket price is $50.00 and can be purchased by clicking this link.

Gates open and refreshments are available at 3:00. Theatrical presentations will begin promptly at 4:00.

Parking is available in the grass lot past the two Cook Island pines.

This live event is sponsored by the Makawao Cemetery Association in conjunction with the Hawaiian Mission Houses Historic Site & Archives.
